24 hours later….

World Goth Fair, by Wildstar Beaumont

I can’t even believe how well that went. Especially that it started so strangely.  SAM crashed completely on Lee the *moment* he pressed play leading to two minutes of cursing and panic until he rebooted the program.  We were worried it was an omen.

It wasn’t.

18 hours of music, one club packed to the gills, a BUNCH of people that stayed for *ALL* of it (omg what is wrong with all of you…) and as far as I know? No one repeated a single track (I’m not sure how that even happened.)

Some serious thank yous, though:

To all our guest DJs.  You were wonderful, especially as for most of you, I wasn’t able to be there because I HAD to sleep.  Thank you all so much, please by all means come back and do it again.

Shari Cortes.  Folks, she was so kind to volunteer to host for Lee since his usual host was going to still be at work, and then wound up hosting *two other sets* on top of it.  Totally above and beyond the call of anything reasonable and sane.

The Gothika Staff who are the hardest working goths in SL, as I have said for seven years now. It’s still true. It’s so easy to work with professionals.  Lokii, Pie, Rydia, Lee, and Kostika THANK YOU. We remain the Greatest Show Unearthed. (How did none of you play that track?)

Amelie Barbour, for the AWESOME projection lights. I love them like loved things. People were asking about them all day.

I don’t know if anyone else recorded their sets (Pie?)  But Lee’s set is here:

and mine is here:

We had no real problems.  No one got banned (which I am SURE is a WGD first.),

Thank you all so much again.

As mentioned all day, we have a BUNCH of music events coming up in the next week, including this one:

Yes, he threatened to do it last year, but this year he’s actually showing up, and we love him for it. More music stuff coming. We have lots left to show you at WGF this year.

The Darkness has risen once more. Welcome to World Goth Fair.

WGF 2015 Sim, by Kostika

Once again, the darkness has either fallen or risen, depending on whichever metaphor you like best.  The creatures of the night have come out to celebrate, and the gates of Cursed are open.

Welcome to World Goth Fair 2015.

This opening has been both strangely organized and incredibly frantic.  It’s been a weird one.  But the stragglers are few, the booths are MANY, and we have once again come together to get our goth on for another year. Okay I realize I always have my goth on but still.

And we even have a map on time.

2015 WGF Booth Map Cursed v1

We have very few people who aren’t in. I am assured that Electica will be ready to go on the 17th, and that Aftershok will be in tonight  Many merchants (self included ) have staggered releases, so there’s stuff out now, and MORE stuff coming for World Goth Day (May 22.)

The landmark is here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cursed/128/129/1000

Our music (when it’s not live from Gothika) is provided by Nightbreed Radio. Because where else would we go?

The cemetery gates are open, and we have released the bats.  Come on up.

Load in has begun!

Blogger review copy boxes went out last night, and as of now Cursed is locked down and open for load in for WGF 2015. The landmark for merchants is in notices. Bloggers, as always, as welcome to come by any time. Please be aware of two things:

1. Decor will be added and moved around over the next few days.

2. Be sure to check your booth at SIM windlight. I promise it’s darker than your work windlight, and you have to remember to turn your vendors on.

Also, very important, remember NO NETWORKED VENDORS.  Don’t be that guy.  I will be alt hopping as I am still VERY behind on my own store stuff, so if you don’t see my main on, poke your head into group chat. Im probably on, on an alt. If it’s a build question though, please ask Lokii. I don’t even know where my own booths are. Loks is the only one who knows where things are right now.

Very important information about WGF 2015.

Greetings, Creepypeople.

It’s almost time to open applications for this year’s World Goth Fair.  But before we do that, there are some very important changes that everyone needs to know about and understand.

Applications will open at some point on April 1 as usual.  But.

1. This year’s WGF will be one sim.(Cursed.)  That means we have a limited amount of space.  It means we will be forced to curate more strongly, and we expect the event to sell out VERY fast.

We are only using one sim because in essence we only have one we can use effectively. While we have appreciated Ely Hynes donating her sim for use in the past, she no longer frequents Second Life and has decided to give up her land (Sium). As of last Friday, Sium has been removed from the grid.

We aren’t using Port Seraphine. Not because we can’t, but because it’s problematic.  Using PS presents some inherent difficulties. Primarily, in that we cannot close it in the week before opening, because not everyone who has a mainstore on the sim (and there are many) are on the org team, and it is entirely unfair to suggest that we should block traffic to someone’s store for a week.  Without the ability to do this, we cannot control access, and we have learned the hard way that we really NEED to.  Since we do not have the ability to parcel land in three dimensions, there is no way to create a parcel 1000M up and simply restrict access to that, without having an impact on what’s going on at ground level.

Secondly, we have also learned that using non-adjacent sims cuts traffic to the one that isn’t Cursed(WGF prime). Although Port Seraphine is close (mapwise) there is no way to connect it to Cursed and still have it connect to WaterWorks as well without needing to rotate every last item at ground level on Cursed (the Lab will only MOVE sims, they will not rotate them.) Having done that once already I can promise you my willingness to do it a second time is zero, and the Lab charges you 150USD to move the sim in the first place.

So this year, it’s a one sim show. Seeing as how well ACS does with that very same setup, this will be fine.

2.  This will no longer be a charity event. I’ll explain.

While we have always been happy to support charity causes at Cursed Events, we’re going to have to stop, due to our continually being caught in the middle between Linden Lab and the charity.

Two years ago, Linden Lab changed their rules about cashouts. It used to be that you could send cashed out money to any paypal account you chose, and in fact that’s what we did. We sent money directly from the charity alt to SOPHIE. The only thing we asked of them was a confirmation (in the form of a screencap or an email or SOMETHING) that they had recieved it (even though we knew, because we’d get notified by the Lab) to prove that the money was received as intended. Due to the high level of charity fraud in SL over the years, creating this level of transparency was very important for us.

We have always had trouble getting the charity to understand this. Always.

Over the years we have had to essentially crawl up their proverbial ass to get so much as a screencap to show they got the money.  We have explained the necessity for this information over and over, and Lee (Cruel Britannia, who deals with them directly, as he is English and far more polite than myself) has had to contact them multiple times a day, every day for the better part of a week, just to get a screencap that quite literally takes less than five seconds to create.

However, once the rules changed, we could no longer do this. What now must happen is that the charity themselves has to have an inworld representative that can cash out the money to their account.  We had a *very, very* difficult time getting them to understand this last year, and in the end, though they did assign a very nice young man to do this, it was clear that there were problems. In fact, we didn’t even know they were going to do it at all until perhaps 48 hours before applications opened. It went that far down to the wire, while we attempted to scramble to find a plan B.

But at the end of last year, when the money was turned over, I stressed repeatedly and strongly to their representative that we NEEDED confirmation when that cash hit their paypal account. I could prove we *gave* them the money, but could not prove anything past that without their help. The fact that they chose not to name their inworld account after the charity was decidedly not helpful in this regard.

We never got that confirmation. At this point, no one at Org has any way to know, at all, if they ever really cashed all that money out or if it’s still sitting in Linden dollars in their charity account. We don’t know, and there is no way for us to check. All we know is we gave it to them. And that’s just not enough.

Given the amount of work this event (really all our events, but this one and ACS in particular) takes, and the toll in time, stress, and opportunity cost on everyone involved, I see precisely no reason why we should continue to collect money for charity when we cannot even get the simplest of confirmations that the money has gone to its intended purpose.

3.  Why not pick another charity?

Because the problems are essentially exactly the same. No matter what charity we choose, the Lab’s rules do not change. We would need to convince that charity to create an inworld account, and be willing to communicate effectively with us to prove the money got to its destination.  We might be able to do the former, but the latter has proven to be something we’re not willing to risk again.

4. What about RFL (as they already have this system in place)?

While we individually all support RFL events throughout the year, due to how RFL is organized and structured, we will not be turning any (any) Cursed Event into an RFL fundraiser. Also, they have plenty already.  I mean, seriously.

What does this mean?

Well, it means we won’t have charity vendors to deal with anymore.
It also means (and this is a double edged sword) that we won’t have to chase bands around anymore either (We’re not going to ask bands to give us rights when the proceeds aren’t going to charity.)

If anyone has any questions about this they’re welcome to ask and I will answer them as completely as I can. I can tell everyone that the vote on this at Org was unanimous, after the events of last year.

Save the date! SATURDAY NIGHT.

WGFjairusposter

Yes, folks – as promised. The one and only Jairus Khan will be at the Gothika Mobile Unit live (not a tribute band, not a pre-recorded set. Him. Live.) at 8pm SLT to do a special DJ set at World Goth Fair.

Jairus is a *really* wonderful person (honestly- I mean that with the greatest sincerity possible) and I invite everyone to come down and enjoy this very special DJ set with all of us at Gothika.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cursed/65/129/1020

All proceeds will benefit the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, of course.  Spread the word. Get an SL account if you don’t have one. But come up and listen to Jairus.  It’s an evening well spent.

Special Guest DJ set today!

Abyssal, by Byrne Darkly

Ok the photo has nothing to do with the DJ set, but it is really lovely. Well done, Byrne!

First thanks are in order to BCreative Wilde for putting out such a great set on Friday.  The crowd wouldn’t let her leave- she was there for 3 hours, rather than 2,and she even gave out random hoodies to people when she herself won a fatpack (she gave away her duplicates to people at the event. Thank you so much, B!

But yes, it’s true- we have another guest DJ set today at 4pm SLT.  Cursed’s own Alisa Perne who happens to also be one of our bloggers, but even more coincidentally lives on Cursed all year long (and I’ve only deleted her house by accident twice in four years!) will be at the Gothika Mobile Unit for two hours of the dark stuff.

SLurl: To Cursed

Tonight at 8pm, we have (theoretical) Pie spinning..whatever it is he likes. I expect it will be a goth set, but he might surprise us with something more industrial.  Either way he won’t know what he’s doing until he does it. But everybody loves Pie, so come on down and get your last slice of the weekend at 8 Pacific Time.

Just to catch people up on what else is going on this week- on Wednesday at 4pm we have the Tiny Invasion.  Last year’s was absolutely bonkers, so be prepared to get small (and put some earplugs in cause the little ones are LOUD).  They’ll be spearheaded by Alexis Radikal of Tiny Bit Radikal once again.  All tinies and micro avatars welcome at the mobile unit.

On Saturday, May 31, Jairus Khan of Ad.Ver.Sary (and Antigen Shift, and even sometimes iVardensphere) will be DJing live at the mobile unit. Time to be announced – Jairus has been a bit busy at the Aftermath festival in Toronto this weekend so I’ll catch up with him in the next couple of days.

For those who are interested in trading duplicate hoodies, or if you’re looking for those elusive rares – Synjari was kind enough to start a thread on SLU for that.

So you can go there and trade away!  Once again I will note that for reasons I can’t explain (because all the machines are exactly the same- I promise you…) the one on Cursed seems to give out more ultrarare fatpacks. I don’t know why. I just know it’s worked out that way. So if you’re trying to win one of those, people have had good luck there.

I haven’t as yet had the time to count them all but I do know from a quick mental estimate that in the first three days the hoodies have been out, we have sold over 1000 of them.  This is awesome and we can’t thank you enough. ALL the proceeds go to the charity, and we appreciate the support of real bands and licensed content in SL as well. (The bands do too. I was just explaining how many we sold to James Francis of Panic Lift on Saturday night and he was amazed at how fast they’ve gone.) We sold 2084 shirts last year, so maybe we can beat the record!

Hypnotizing, by Sonya Marmurek

In other news- a bit of admin I need to take care of.

We do understand that sometimes, people are hearing about WGF for the very first time in the middle of the event and suddenly get the urge to show support of some kind.  But at that point, the best way to do it is to just come down and shop the event, or toss some cash into one of the tip jars.  Sending us gift cards to your store won’t help – we have already passed the one contest day we do during the event (World Goth Day itself) and we only take GCs from merchants already in the event anyway. So if you send us stuff we only have to send it back and explain that. If you want to participate, we open applications for merchants on April 1.  Applying is no guarantee you’ll get in, but it gives you significantly better odds than just handing us merch/gc’s, which definitely won’t work.  We love that so many people want to participate but we have to do it in an organized fashion.

Also, we’ve had several requests for interviews.  Here’s the deal on that:  The only person who is likely to agree to this is Lee (Cruel Britannia.) That’s how it should be- World Goth Day itself was his gig to begin with, and since he does a lot of interviews on his own shows, he is comfortable doing them.  But for some reason people keep asking me instead.

I am terrible at giving interviews. I speak too quickly and sometimes people have problems with my accent. Also, I’m REALLY not comfortable talking to random strangers like that so unless you’re someone I already know pretty well I’m probably going to say no.  It’s not personal, but it is a firm decision.  Everyone else at org has definitively said they won’t do interviews at all.

So the person you need to speak with is Lee. Please bear in mind that he is in the UK, and as such is 8 hours ahead of Pacific Time.  He also is not inworld very much (really only 2 hours a week, on Thursdays.) So if you want to reach him the best way to do it is to contact him on twitter (@CruelBritannia) or on his website, http://cruelbrit.co.uk, or on facebook. Please also be aware that a reasonable amount of advance notice is required.

And now, with one full week left in this year’s WGF… the current charity total is:  648745L or approximately $2525USD. With one week left to go, we have plenty of time to once again crack the million linden raised mark!

more news tomorrow!
